The Mountain Lakes region is considered the heartland of West Virginia. The region is defined by water — it is truly everywhere. Deep lakes and ponds, flowing streams, creeks and rivers and impressive waterfalls are more prevalent here than anywhere in the state.
Five major lakes — Stonewall Jackson, Burnsville, Stonecoal, Sutton and Summersville — are favorite spots for outdoor lovers to fish, boat, water ski, swim and camp. Numerous state parks, golf courses, whitewater rapids and scenic backroads provide additional opportunities to enjoy the beauty of the area.
Picturesque towns and bustling cities are nestled in valleys surrounded by forested mountains making the Mountain Lakes region the most peaceful area in the state. Small-town charm is prevalent, but that doesn’t mean cities are sleepy. Each unique city features a variety of topnotch stores, fine cafes and restaurants.
Learn more about the Civil War by following the Civil War Discovery Trail. The region contains three trail stops — Bulltown Historical District, Jackson’s Mill Historic Area and Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park.
Enjoy endless views of sparkling lakes and forested mountains while relaxing in the peaceful countryside that makes the Mountain Lakes region a great place to live and visit.
