This region of West Virginia allows you to enjoy all of the amenities big cities provide and still venture deep into thick forests within only a few minutes. The area features historic homes, art, history and children's museums, music, theater and dance venues and sophisticated shops. State parks and forests and historical monuments also call Metro Valley home.
The elegant state capitol in Charleston is a favorite spot for architecture and history buffs. The capitol, located beside the broad Kanawha River, provides an excellent place to view the city. You will find great shops and restaurants nearby including the indoor/outdoor Capitol Market, located within a 1905 rail station.
Railroad enthusiasts should plan to visit in the fall when the Collins P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society hosts the popular railroad event the New River Train Excursion. The scenic ride takes people from Huntington to Hilton by way of the New River Gorge during the most beautiful fall foliage period.
Smaller cities including Barboursville, Milton, Hurricane, Dunbar and South Charleston offer an array of opportunities for visitors including great museums, wonderful dining establishments, world-class glass factories, ancient Native American mound sites, fine wineries and more.
