Brookside Inn and Retreat Center

Stay at Brookside Inn and enjoy the hospitality and traditions of our mountains...

Originally part of a 19th Century resort complex, Brookside Inn maintains the hospitality, spirit and traditions of the historic Allegheny Mountain retreats. We encourage our guests to relax and leave behind the routines of everyday.

A unique, early Arts and Crafts shingle-style building, the Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places. Our decor is both eclectic and of the period but intended for your use and comfort. Our four guestrooms are spacious, have either full or king size beds and private baths. One guestroom includes two beds - a twin and a full size.

Meals at Brookside Inn are intended to be memorable. Simple yet distinctive, well prepared and often created with local, organic produce, your meals are unrushed. All accommodations include a full breakfast and dinner is available in our on site restaurant.

Especially suited for retreats of all types, the second floor has a large central parlor that can be converted to accommodate your needs whether they be for open floor space or meeting tables. Arrangements can be made for group meals including specific dietary requests and reservations can be made for local tours and events. We will be happy to work with you to plan your retreat, intimate wedding and reception, family reunion or private dinner.

While you are in the area:

Directly across the road from Brookside Inn is one of the best kept secrets in West Virginia - Cathedral State Park, a National Landmark forest of virgin hemlock, rhododendrons and mountain streams.  Rural but not isolated, Aurora is located equal-distance between Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County, MD and Canaan Valley in Tucker County, WV.  A little more than an hour's drive will have you in Morgantown, Elkins or the Ohiopyle area of Pennsylvania.

From the peaks and ridges to the valleys through which untamed rivers flow, the Allegheny Mountain highlands of West Virginia remain one of the east's paramount four-season vacation areas.

There is so much to keep you entertained, you will return again and again:

-Hike or mountain bike on wilderness trails at Blackwater Falls State Park, Dolly Sods and Monongahela National Forest or take a day-hike on a nearby section of the Allegheny Trail.

-Fish, swim or boat in our rivers and lakes. White water raft down the wild waters of the Cheat, float in the river's shallows or sail on nearby Deep Creek Lake.

-Downhill or cross-country ski, snowboard or snowshoe at Wisp, Blackwater, Timberline, Canaan Valley and White Grass.  Or, bring your own gear and break a trail in Cathedral State Park.

-Play golf on one of the area courses including Alpine Lake, Canaan Valley, Deep Creek Lake, and Oakland.

Or, if a quieter, more relaxing visit is of greater appeal...

-Our ridge tops are breathtaking when fall colors reach their peak in late September or early October. Native rhododendron light up the forest when in bloom early to mid July. Cathedral State Park affords gentle hikes and has accessible trails.

-Antique shops abound and weekend festivals are numerous and close by.

-Enjoy the local cultural activities including live theater and music, fine crafts, and exhibitions. Visit historic towns and sites such as Arthurdale, Thomas, Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob.

-Research your family's history at the local historical societies and libraries.

-Be alone with your daydreams on one of Brookside's front porch rockers or spend the evening by the fire pit on the deck.  For those cooler days and evenings, bundle up with a good book in an easy chair or curl up in front of the wood stove. Then, to shake out the kinks, you can take another stroll through Cathedral State Park.

Open Thursday through Sunday, Brookside Inn offers a cozy full service restaurant and bar. Our dinners, as well as the wine and beer selection, satisfy the discriminating taste of our guests. Entrees, salads, soups, appetizers and occasional desserts on the (mostly) Mediterranean menu are prepared with local, often organic, produce. The menu is seasonal and changes daily. During the warmer months we extend service onto the deep covered porch.

From March through October, usually on Saturday, we host our DINNER & MUSIC EVENING featuring live music to accompany the fixed price, reservation only, four to six course dinner. Some of the past dinners have included Cassoulet with Duck Confit, Boeuf Bourguignon, Slow roasted rosemary garlic chicken, Braciole with wild mushroom duxelle, Fresh ham with a pilaf of amaranth and quinoa, and Whiskey Pork Stew with Sauteed Cabbage. The menu is posted on our website and on Facebook daily or you can call 304-735-6344.

Live music is available at several nearby venues or you can have dinner at any one of the fine local restaurants. But, be sure to leave time for star-gazing during moonlight walks...
